Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham extended their winning streak in away games in the top division and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in role at each end of pitch

After a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only attempts on target, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defensive duties, combining well with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the exits after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had netted only one league goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having room and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, too, failed to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.

Everton: Moyes' men head to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: Spurs go to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round Carabao Cup match against the Magpies.
